Possum

I came to this shelter to live with my shelter mum on October 20, 2005, so my shelter mum could take care of me better than my other human did. My other human put me in a cage with cedar shaving and she did not clean out my poop. I had to live in the stinky cage with dirty laundry and dishes. Shelter mum says it is no wonder I did not want to go back in my cage it was dirty and stinky. Mum would not even let the cage come into the house when I got here. She set up the sick pen you see me in on my picture, it was clean, fresh and had lots of clean food, water and bedding.

I was born in 2004. I am happy and I love my shelter mum. I like it here because I get out of my house (cage) a lot, my shelter mum lets me come up to her apartment to sleep with her sometimes, sometimes she lets me hang out with her in the cubby when she works on the puter’ too. The best part is I get an all cleaned cage every single day of my life. Mum takes me out every morning at 4:30 to let me play with her when she is getting ready for work. When mum comes home from work she takes my cage apart puts fresh papers, bedding and dishes. Mum makes sure everything is clean for me. I am sponsored by a shelter friends in Endicott, N.Y. and Shallotte, N.C.

Possum; Is our club reporter she and Andy do our monthly news letters; if you would like to see the newsletter E-Mail me and the kids will e-mail you a copy or you can look under Master Largo News here.

Possum is a good ferret cub-reporter. Possum prefers to be a single ferret, she is not happy around other ferrets so she spends her time spying on her mum to see what she can report in the next news letter. She is a talker, and moves like lightning around the shelter. She is a tiny little girl. Surrendered to us in October of 2005 for behavioral problems. Her behavioral problems were directly connected to and due to her appalling living conditions. It took her less than 48 hours to realize she no longer was going to be returned to a filthy feces filled cage with cedar shavings. Once she came to that realization she had NO MORE behavioral problems.

Hi Brenda,
I know it's been awhile since Possum came my way, but I thought I would let you know that she is every bit effect as an adviser here at the Rainbow Bridge, as she was when she was part of your life - you have taught her well!!!!! She even told me she learned everything from you, 'specially how to give love, and she showed me, gave me a big, squishy hug!!
She misses you, and keeps her fuzzy butt busy at the Bridge Greeter's Intake Office, and she tells me that when you get her, she's going to teach you everything she knows and give you millions of big, squishy hugs, and kisses and war dances and love, love, love!!!!!!

I know I am far, but I will do my very best to be there for you. Much love, with whisker and nose kisses, I understand, it's going to be very difficult... She was a great little girl, and just so lucky she had you to be with her no matter how tough things were. I know she is proud to have you as her Mom, as well as everyone else!

Possum went back to the shelter this morning – she had access to roaming the entire up and down stairs last night – it was her bank of cages that had the night shift – she did well – moved from bed to bed during the night –

The reason I know is because every time I got up to check on her she was some place else – she ate a bowl of soup at bed time then another this morning before I put her back in her cage –

What ever it was that caused her to be unresponsive on Thursday is at this time not causing it now – I will however keep a very close eye on her – she is 7 after all – so she is not a young’ in – a senior citizen for sure - so she needs extra watching –

Possum was fine when I woke her this morning to serve soup – responsive and mobile - she ate some on her own then I held her to get her to eat more before I left for work this morning – I have no idea what that was all about however I will keep a close eye on her – I will get her on soup 2 times a day from now on –

I was getting ready to leave for work this afternoon – I moved kids off the porch I was afraid it was going to be too hot by the time I got home – I moved 2 off the porch put in the kitchen – I needed one I could trust up in my space while I was gone – I grabbed Possum –

I set her over the barrier turned around to walk out the door and she did not move – I look closer and see she had piddled all over the floor as I was setting her down but she was not moving or responsive –

I scratch walking out the door to go to work to attend Possum – I put her on a towel on my desk – she was glassy eyed – but breathing – warm to the touch but not feverish – she did not respond to my talking to her – she felt like she had the hiccups or was retching on the inside but not outwardly – I could feel this when I put my hand on her tummy -

I decided to do a BG – it was 90 - not so low that I was getting what I was getting from her – so I toss Dex or no Dex back and forth for a minute or two – as Dr. Sandra’s words ring in my head – if you have nothing to loose do steroids – steroids it is -

I did 10 units of Dex, Possum pooped a good looking poop as she was laying on my desk - so I decided it was not an obstruction going on – she did stiffen and act like she was going to go into seizers but all she did was stretch – arch her head back and stay that way – she felt like she was getting stiff -

There was nothing more I could do for her at this point so I set her in the sick pen on the floor so if she did have seizers she would not fall off of anything – I expected to come home and find her gone –

What I found was a standing up ferret looking at me as I walked over to her – she is running around the upstairs checking things out – I have no idea what was going on but she is back – she looks fine and is acting fine – I do think I am going to keep her up in the sick pen for the night to keep an eye on her –

I got my little girl back – Phew

Possum is eating but still not herself

Updated: July 25, 2011 - AM

Possum is leaving good poo but you can tell she if still off – she does not dance – whine and complain – I had her out with me yesterday – she had no interest in hanging out and letting me love on her -

Updated: July 22, 2011

One week & one day – seems like a life time ago that this nightmare started -

Brooklyn is gone – she finally decided she had had enough – she was so pale my guess her ulcer was bleeding into her tummy –

Possum had her face in the food dish this morning so I was pleased about that –

Molly is still with us drinking water but still not interested in eating unless I force her to do so

Dexter continues to struggle – he will not eat even when I offer him food, unless I force him to eat then I can only get a ml or two into him – his little eyes look so sad and sick -

The rest of the shelter is doing okay – except for the kids I have listed here the cages that were tagged suspect have not been upgraded to confirmed so I figure that is a + no new suspect cages either –

I still have not gotten the report from Opie – I called on Thursday I was told there was no report yet and they would call me when it came in –

Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers
Brenda

Well I was hoping that things were turning around but when I got Possum up for her shift she is now sick – not eating – so I have 4 that are not eating –

Brooklyn and Dexter are eating if I insist – literally –

I will start doing the same for Possum – other kids so far are doing okay – back to the shelter to get more cages done –
