Phoebe

May 9, 2025: Phoebe is looking good there is a bit of a bump let I'm hoping it is just residual swelling, most of the swelling is gone. Dr. Dana will be here Wednesday to check her out. There is only one more day of Meloxicam, I will continue the Clavamox until Dr. Dana sees her.
May 7, 2025: Phoebe is up in the ferret room she didn't finish her soup but her poo pan looks pretty full she had been eating during the night. She will eat it later, I left it on the floor for her to finish.
May 6, 2025:
Dr. Dana said after looking Phoebe over that she felt she needed to remove the eye, she felt it needed to be done sooner than later for Phoebe's comfort. Dr. Dana did surgery on her lunch hour. I was informed that Phoebes surgery was done. The abscess was behind her eye, we were thinking it might be cancer, but it turned out it was the abscess. The abscess was cleaned out, her eye was removed, Dr. Dana said there were no sighs of cancer. We've had 1 eyed ferrets here before, they adjust well.
I set her up in the horizontal cage to keep her from climbing. I put the big fish bed Marcia got the kids in the cage, after she had her soup she settled into the fish. I went to check on her at 7 last night, she had eaten all the soup I left her I gave her more. Dr. Dana sent her home with pain meds Meloxicam once a day as well has keeping her on the Clavamox. Dr. Dana wants to see her in a week.
This morning the soup I left her last night was gone, I set another bowl with meds in the cage for her this morning. She was eating kibble as I was getting ready to come upstairs. Her face looks less swollen this morning, shes begging to get up. I may set up one of the smaller play areas for her to hang out in.
Phoebe ate 2 bowls of soup this morning. She was begging to get up out of the cage so I let her have the ferret room while I was in there with her. She was rolling around in the box next to my feet, she went up the tube to get into the cornstarch peanut box. She slept there for a couple of hours. She's acting like she feels better. I took some pictures of her rolling around in the box and sleeping in the cornstarch peanut box. She ate two bowls of soup this afternoon. One of them with her meds in the soup. I'm giving her the pain meds in the morning.

May 4, 2025: While Skylar was here I cleaned up Phoebe's incision nothing came out. The abscess looks smaller, she acts like she is more comfortable. Phoebe ate a full bowl of soup laying in my arms at noon, I'll try to remember to get a picture of the incision tomorrow morning. Her eye still looks funny. she ate full bowl of soup at meds time. Phoebe ate all the bowls of soup I offered her today. The abscess seems to have dried up but her eye still doesn't look good. I tried wiping her face with warm soapy water, she fought me every time I touched her, I believe she is in pain. I think there may be a bad tooth that is not showing outward signs. I'm going to ask Dr. Dana to look closer.

May 3, 2025: Phoebe has an abscess on her forehead above her right eye, causing pressure behind her eye. By the time Dr Dana saw her the eye was being pushed her eye had moved. Dr Dana did a needle aspiration to the area, what she showed me was thick gray gunk. Dr. Dana lanced the area to release the pressure,to get it to drain. Phoebe's eye looked way better after that. By the time we got home the incision had closed, I was told I needed to keep it draining. I asked if it was a abscessed tooth Dr. Dana said she looked and did not believe so. We have her on Clavamox twice a day.
We discussed the possibility of letting her go if we can't get the abscess cleaned up, the other option discussed was removing her eye. Dr. Dana and I agree on quality of life, it is obvious Phoebe was in pain with the pressure. After the abscess was lanced there was an improvement in Phoebe's eye, and her demeanor. Dr. Dana said by Monday we should know if the Clavamox and draining will take care of the abscess.
This morning it appears the abscess has gone down considerably, I am going to have to pull the scab to open it back up. I let her have her soup without messing with it.
May 2, 2025: Phoebe looks like she feels like crap. She did eat a bowl and a half of soup while laying in my arms this morning. I'm going to reach out to Dr. Dana to see if she will come take a look at her.
May 1, 2025: I gave Phoebe 10 ml of fluids this morning before putting her in the Window end. I moved Phoebe into the ferret room at 10. I offered her soup, she ate 2 bowls of soup while laying in my arms. I left her in the ferret room for the remainder of the afternoon. Phoebe was up wandering around acting perfectly normal. I checked for dehydration, she was fine. I offered her a bowl of soup she ate the entire bowl. She wanted to go into the library/window end so I put Beaker, Scooter, and MP in the ferret room, let Phoebe have the library/window end. she settled herself somewhere.
April 30, 2025: Phoebe was acting off, she didn't want her soup, I tried getting a glucose read but I could not get enough blood for the strip to give me a reading. Butter gave too much blood, Phoebe not enough. I will see if I can get her to sit still long enough to soak her foot in warm water in the morning. A trick Dr. Sandra taught me. I had Phoebe too upset to try again.

Initial Contact, April 18, 2023:
Good morning! We are in a tough situation and are hoping you can help us out. My daughters have a 3 year old ferret named Phoebe that sadly we cannot provide her the life she deserves. When we adopted her and her brother, we didn't know how allergic my wife would be to them. Over the last two years we have tried numerous things to try to alleviate their affect on her but nothing has worked. To add to this, my daughters have started more activities and have less time to spend with her. We love her tremendously but wish we could turn back time now knowing we aren't the right family for her. Phoebe’s brother, died a year ago from what the vet suspected was a blocked urinary track. We would like to see her go somewhere she can be happy with other ferrets and more attention.
Could you please advise us on what our best options might be? As well as if there is any room in your shelter. Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. She is a sweet girl and deserves better! Thanks for your time and hope to hear back soon.
Thank you, Stephen & Traci-Lynn
Shelter Response:
Where are you located?
Owner Response: We live in Greece near Rochester
Shelter Response: Here is the link to what needs to be done to surrender, we have 1 opening, she needs to be vetted and vaccinated before coming here. We will take her, you will need to keep us informed of your intentions so we don't give the only spot we have to someone else.
Owner Response: Thank you for your time. We will definitely take that spot. She is currently due for vaccinations so of course our plan is to have those done first. South Towne is down to 2 doctors so they are not seeing exotics currently. I am trying to make an appointment with another vet. Once this is done I will coordinate with you on a date and time to drop her off. We greatly appreciate your help and again are sorry that we ended up in this position.
Shelter Response: Call Dr. Edwards office in Brockport. He is our vet, tell them she is being surrendered to us.
Owner Response: Called Brockport but they wouldn't be able to see her until June. I then called the Arc and they can probably get her in tomorrow so I just have to call them when they open in the morning to schedule for tomorrow evening. I will keep you updated.
Shelter Response: Okay thanks for keeping us informed.
Owner Response, April 21, 2023: Vet visit today at 2:00. Would I be able to drive her down next Saturday the (29th)? One issue however—all the vets I have talked to are not doing distemper vaccines now. Are you still requiring them?
Shelter Response: The 29th won't work, we will have 14 volunteers here that I will need to direct. It takes about 45 min to fill out paperwork and settle things. What are you feeding her? Everything that belongs to her comes with her. This past year there was a distemper outbreak across the entire country that thousands of ferrets and mink were destroyed. It was so bad that Marshall's suspended breeding and selling kits to the pet stores. It boggles my mind that supposed medical experts would not vaccinate for distemper. I've said my peace. Do you have a dog and if so is the dog vaccinated?
Owner Response: No problem. I could also do the 30th if that worked. Weekdays would be harder for me but I could do one if necessary. She eats Marshall premium ferret food and I will bring at a large supply with her as per your website. I would also like to make a donation when I get there as a thank you! We do have a dog and he is always fully up to date on vaccinations. They however are never even on the same floor of the house together—completely separated. We are over an hour away so we could probably aim for 11am next Sunday.
Shelter Response: We accept donations. Okay 11 next Sunday 30th works. That makes me feel better.. FYI you can bring distemper into your home on your shoes.. I'll see you next Sunday, if anything changes please let us know.
