November 12, 2024:
Today the D-5 have been here 4 weeks. I'm going to reach out to Dr. Dana to make an appointment get them vetted and vaccinated.
November 10, 2024:
D5 got to use the porch this morning, I shut it down at noon. It's raining and cold this afternoon. Peanut is a suicidal ferret, the crazy kid was in the top of the cage sleep box, he decided instead of coming down to the floor by tube he was going to crawl over the 4" barrier to get down. Thankfully I was in the room and saw what he was doing. I didn't give him the chance to continue downward. Most ferrets with take the path of least resistance, ie the tube, Peanut isn't one of them I guess.
November 4, 2024:
The D-5 seem to have done well in the cage last night, there was still a bit of food in the dishes, lots and lots o poo. A good indication they are eating well.
November 1, 2024:
Sara helped me finish the end of the D-5 cage, all that is left to cover is the door that the water bottles and water dishes are connected to. That is a job only I can do because I'm going to have to piece it to cover around the water bottles.
October 31, 2024:
When the 5 are in the kitchen they want to be on the porch. I had to shut it down at noon yesterday. They got the porch first this morning.
The grates are covered There is 1 more side of the cage that needs to be covered. I hope to get that done today. Then the 5 will be able to use the cage.
I did get the new crew weighed yesterday. Peanut is up to 1# 7 oz. I also took his bg the meter read 78, I'm going to give him another week to settle then decide if he needs to be on meds. Dr. Sandra's suggestion.
Butter and Ebony are now 2# Cookie and Crumble weighed in at 1# 7 oz and 1# 9 oz respectively. I'm thrilled they are gaining weight and acting like ferrets. The new crew now come when I tap on the barriers.
October 30, 2024:
I'm going to work on getting the cage completed and the grate covered today. I literally need to lay on my belly to secure the coroplast and storage drawers to the grate. I let the 5 run through several rooms while I served meds. Several of them found the tube that leads to the top shelf sleep box. They are becoming happy little fuzz butts.
I'm a bit concerned about Peanut, I believe he has insulinoma. I'm going to check his BG this morning, I may need to put him on meds. He doesn't seem to be putting on weight the way the others are, is lethargic. I set him in front of the bowl of soup he did eat some of it.
Everyone else is holding their own.
October 29, 2024:
Another morning the fur kids can use the porch. I found Peanut was able to get himself up on the youth bed and into the fish sleeping bag. I let the 5 run a few rooms while I served meds. I need to cover the grates on the bottom of the cages today. I have storage drawers secured to the grates but there are areas that are not covered. To be safe I'm going to cover them with coroplast. I will work on getting their cage covered as well.
Covering areas that these fur kids can get into is priority. the next priority is getting them weighed.
October 28, 2024:
The 5 are starting to act like ferrets, they were wresting with each other this afternoon. I can feel they are putting on weight. They have been here a week tomorrow, I'm going to weigh them again in the morning. I let them have the kitchen while I picked up puppy pads in the window end. one of them was running up the tube on the stairs, and sliding down. I enjoy watching them get better.
October 27, 2024:
Dansville 5 are spending the night in the window end. I don't have their cage completed I spent the major portion of the day getting the bars covered. I still have much left to cover.
The little guy is looking better, eyes are brighter. Dr. Sandra said there may be some brain swelling. It's going to take a few days before we know if there is any permanent damage.
Dr. Sandra wants us to do Dex for two more days reducing the dose by 1/2 each day.
October 26, 2024:
In the mornings I go around to pick up the poo that the ferrets have left on the floor first. This morning I found several poos in the same spot. I looked up and discovered one of the Dansville boys had gotten himself out of the cage and was literally hanging by his neck. I grabbed the stability bar that was left over from the cage modification broke one of the bars to get him out. He's alive, I offered him soup he ate some, he's dehydrated and in shock. He's unstable on his feet.
I set him in one of the empty cages after I gave him a Dex shot. I will give him fluids when I get back down stairs. They need to be warmed before giving them.
I will be covering their cage with Chloroplast sheets today. He got through the bars next to the poo box that is secured to the cage. I put them all in the window end until I get back down stairs.
When Molly and I were covering the top of that cage I was obsessing about uncovered spots they may try to get through, I never thought they would try to get through the door bars.
October 25, 2024:
All of the Dansville 5 are eating the soup I offer them. 5 little noses in the soup bowl tonight. When I started serving the soup this afternoon they lifted their little heads sniffing from the hammock and bench bunk.
October 24, 2024:
It's good we have 2 poo boxes in the Dansville 5 cage. It was obvious they were eating a lot. The poo boxes were full, so full they started to poo on the floor cover. The 2 food bowls were almost empty. I had left a bowl of soup in their cage before I shut the shelter down, that was cleaned up.
October 23, 2024:
The newbies did well overnight, the soup I left them was gone. I offered soup this morning 4 little noses dove into the dish
Initial Request, October 22, 2024:
We were contacted about a neglect case, could we take them in? A business of 5. They were brought to us this morning. They are so skinny, they've had their faces in the food dishes all day. No names, nails terribly curled. I weighed them, they are all under weight, 2 boys 3 girls. I got their nails cut, then introduced them to soup. 3 of them dove in, the other 2 not so much. As long as they are eating kibble they should beef up. I'll dropper feed the soup to the ones that aren't interested. Tom is coming tomorrow to help me turn 2 single cages into a horizontal.
