January 19, 2024:
I watched Draco steal a stuffed toy out of the toy box, run away with it to hide it.
Far Away Mom's Response: Awww I have stuffed toys all over!! He will be happy about that!! How's Bobbitt? Have you tried seeing is they like each other???

Shelter Response: I let them sniff each other for a minute yesterday. Typical reaction, bottle brush tail. I didn't want to stress Bobbit, she is tiny. Not at all like the picture that was sent. My guess that was a young Bobbit.

Far Away Mom's Response: No rush just wondering! Tiny little girl. Well you do what you think is best no need to stress anyone out. I'm looking forward to hanging out with all the kids when I get there. I put in for the 26 & 27 off if I'm needed I'll be there. Do you want me to plan on bringing some cat food with me when I come?

Shelter Response: I took Bobbit into the ferret room with me while I cleaned cages. Draco was already in there. They spent an hour and a half with me. They both walked around the room, sometimes under the cages, I stayed vigilant making sure they didn't get aggressive. They sniffed each other; when Bobbit acted like she wanted to get aggressive I picked her up, hugged her then set her back down.
Draco was under a blanket in a bed on the floor, I had pulled out of a cage to toss in the laundry. It may just work.. Bobbit would go up to the gate where the Muppet's were standing an start digging at the gate to get to them. But did not act like that when she was going up to Draco.
I took her out of the ferret room when I left. I will take her back in with me after I fix my lunch.

Far Away Mom's Response: Well that sounds promising!! Hopefully they love each other and me and we can all live happily ever after!! Thanks for the update!! I'm so happy to hear about how it's going!!! Thank you for all you do!!!

Shelter Response: Bobbit and Draco spent the majority of yesterday in the ferret room. They stayed in their favorite sleeping spots. On occasion Bobbit would go over to sniff Draco, I allowed her too as long as she didn't get into the sack he was sleeping in. He mostly sleeps on top of the sack.
I left the playroom gate open so both of them had the playroom and ferret room all night. There is no sign of aggression, fear, or apprehension. Neither of them goes on a search and destroy mission. I opened the gate between the library and ferret room this morning. Draco is sleeping on top of his sack, Bobbit was eating in the library.

Far Away Mom's Response: Awesome that sounds very promising!! It will be great if they are besties before they come home here and then after a bit I can try and integrate with the 2 girls I think they are all about the same age! If that doesn't work then they'll have their own space! Thanks for the update and for all the work with them!!!!

December 29, 2024:
My sweet, lovely Draco, Your red velvet and gold throne pillows are here! And that's the whole problem, they're HERE. Apparently Far Away Aunt Mary Ellen forgot to tell the nice Amazon people to send the pillows to Mum's house so they got sent here to mine.
Second problem - it appears that I have ordered pillow covers and not the pillows, themselves. I will have to make a separate order for the pillows. Right now what you have are two lovely pieces of red velvet cloth with gold brocade edging to lay on.
There is a bright side to all this, though! Now that the pillow covers are in my hands, I can find the nice lady who did the embroidery job for the pink dresses I once got for Frenchie, Rizzo, and Sandy about 12 years ago (I hope she's still in business) and have her embroider "DRACO" in gold on each of the covers.
Let me know what you want, sweetheart, and I will be happy to oblige.
Love, Far Away Mom Mary Ellen

Shelter Response: Well bummer, Mum has done that before. NO! NO wait! The covers are perfect, I can crawl into them to sleep. Please do not order the pillows. That would be perfect far away Mom.. covers are better than pillows.

Far Away Mom's response: OK, sweetheart! Far Away Mom will NOT order the pillows, she WILL get in touch with Miss Camilla to arrange for the embroidery job, and them she will send the covers to the Shelter. BTW, genius idea about using the covers as a set of sleep bags! Mom would never have thought if that! My sweet love Draco is so clever! Love,
Far Away Mom Mary Ellen

December 9, 2024:
Draco was in the library with me while I was cleaning up the water mess, this morning. I set him into the rice box; he decided that was pretty neat, I stuck my hand in he started to play with me. A first.

December 7, 2024:
Draco is finally eating his soup on his own. I've not seen him eat any kibble so I'm offering him soup every few hours. He was offered 5 bowl throughout the day, he ate them all. His poo is back to normal.

December 6, 2024:
Draco has poo real poo on his pad this morning. Not a lot but poo. I offered him soup by dropper he ate the entire 1/4 cup. I will offer him more when I get back down stairs. It appears Draco is turning the corner. I offered him soup at noon first dropper feeding him, then offering him the bowl. I had him on my lap. He finished the 1/4 cup of soup. At 4 pm I offered him a bowl of soup still holding him on my lap, but did not offer the dropper. He ate the entire 1/4 cup and wanted more. Maybe he has decided this is not such a bad place to be.

December 5, 2024:
I've been dropper feeding Draco, I insist he take at least 5ml. This morning after he had his dropper of soup I set him in the kitchen. Before coming upstairs I offered him more soup, he appeared to want to eat it out of the bowl. I sat him on my lap, offered the bowl of soup, he ate what was left. Maybe another 8 ml . This boy is grieving. He is leaving icky slim on the papers. Obvious he is not eating. I've been dropper feeding Draco throughout the day. I offered him soup while doing meds. He took 10 ml. I tried to get him to eat some out of the bowl but would not have it. He has a poo that almost resembles a poo, slightly green ting, seedy but formed. I'll continue to dropper feed him until the boy starts to eat his kibble.

December 3, 2024:
Draco seemed to be in better spirits today. He found some treats the others missed, he was eating them. At this point as long as he is eating something I'm happy. I did catch him picking up a single piece of TF off the floor, he ate that. I offered him soup tonight he didn't want it.
I've discovered he does not like his soup the consistency of gravy he likes broth soup. I watered the bowl of soup down, reheated it. He had not touched it while I was still doing shelter duties.

December 2, 2024:
The new little guy Draco was concerning me, he would eat 2 bowls of soup when I was serving soup. Then Sunday he stopped eating, he hasn't eaten kibble since he got here. That's why I was giving him so much soup. When I got up yesterday morning he hadn't eaten his soup. His poo was diarrhea. He would not eat anything yesterday. I thought I might have to start fluids. This morning I found he had not eaten his soup again last night.
I got him up early with morning shift offered him a bowl of soup he ate what was in the bowl, I think I saw him eat 1 kibble. He has pep in his step this morning. He tried out the rice box, doing some snorkeling. It's been a week since he was dropped off. I hope he is starting to feel comfortable being here.

December 2, 2024:
Kallista, Did you feed Draco any other food than Marshals? The boy is not eating kibble, I've been keeping him going with soup, but he did not eat his soup last night or this morning. His poo is more diarrhea than formed. If there is another food you offered him it would be helpful to see if I can get him to eat. He is not feeling well at all this morning.

Previous owners' response: I always fed him the Marshal's, i got a new phone and have just seen this email. I'm trying to find Draco on the website to see how he is now, i hope everything is okay.

Shelter Response: He is not up on the site yet because we weren't sure he was going to make it. He was not eating any kibble, we were feeding him duck soup ever few hours. He seems to be settling in now but still not eating kibble that I can see, although his poops indicate he must be eating some. I removed him from the cage I had set up for him, he now gets a couple of rooms to free roam. We are now offering him soup 4 am, noon and 4 pm he eats 2 bowls at a sitting. One of our board members wants to adopt him but at this point I don't want to disrupt his life again. He is at least no long grieving and depressed. He has any kind of kibble he desires. It's time to serve him his soup.

Previous owners' response: Thank you so much for your thoughtful update about Draco. It truly means the world to me to hear how he’s doing, although i am so saddened that i caused him to feel unwell with this move and I cannot express how much I miss him. Surrendering him was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, and it’s something I’ve been struggling with ever since. I love Draco deeply and only ever wanted the best for him. Knowing he has a space to roam freely and is cared for so tenderly by you and your team reassures me that I made the right decision, even though it has been incredibly difficult. I just want him to be happy, healthy, and loved, and I’m grateful beyond words that you are ensuring exactly that. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there is anything Draco or your rescue might need—I would be more than happy to help in any way I can. I am so thankful for all the care and kindness you’ve shown him and for giving him the best chance at a happy life, and im so appreciative to stay in touch.

Initial Contact, November 17th, 2024:
Good afternoon, my name is Kallista and I started my ferret mother journey in 2019 with a 3 year old ferret named Pepper. Then in 2020 with two one year old boys Draco and his brother Loki. Unfortunately since then Pepper and loki have both passed away leaving Draco as a lone ferret. A recent turn of events have left me in a very sad situation. March 20th my dad passed away and since then I had to take over the role of helping my elderly grandparents who live in Greece which requires me to travel for long periods of time. I was thinking of getting him a friend and trying to pay sitters while i am gone but unfortunately this is just not attainable and I don’t want him to suffer and be lonely. I love him so much and this decision is not easy. I am hoping that with your help he can at least live out his days in the company of other ferrets or a loving family with plenty of time on their hands.

November 18th, 2024, Shelter Response:
Hi Kristina, where are you located?

Owner Response:
Hello, I'm located in northern new jersey, i understand you guys are in New York but I don't mind traveling a bit. I just want the best for him.

Shelter Response:
As long as you keep us informed, we will hold the spot for him. Let us know when he is scheduled to see the vet. rabies and distemper required. Once that is done let us know the time frame you would like to bring him. We will look at our calendar to see if we can come up with a day and time that works for both of us.

Owner Response:
I am so grateful. I will have to make him a vet appointment and arrange to come but its no problem. Is there a deadline i should bring him by? I should have also mentioned that i would be free to bring him next week any day Tuesday through Friday. Please let me know if any of those days would work for you. Thank you so much i will keep you updated we have just made the appointment for Monday 11/25. I should have also mentioned that i would be free to bring him next week any day Tuesday through Friday. Please let me know if any of those days would work for you.

I will discuss today with my family whether we will be coming Tuesday or Wednesday and get back to you tonight. I am very appreciative of your help.
