Fern - getting into the Christmas spirit

February 27, 2017:
Sandy, Bruce and Sandy's cousin came to visit with lunch - Sandy brought chili and fresh asparagus - I wish I could remember cousins name - I don't - she is not a ferret person but seemed to enjoy hanging with the fur kids, we ate, visited then took a walk out to the garden, they left about 2:30. Sandy was showing me pictures of Fern and Daisy - the two girls that got from the shelter. They look happy and healthy.

  Daisy

July 11, 2016:
It has been nearly 2 months since we brought Fern, and Daisy home from the Lakeroad Ferret Farm Shelter. Slowly, they were introduced to the cats, and Paz, {the dog}, and to Carlos, a 5 year old ferret.
Little by little they explored in limited spaces, but now, in the morning, when I open their door they are down the stairs in a rush, with Carlos, looking to play, run, snoop, {and poop} until they are tired.
They are friends with the dog, and I try to keep the cats in a room, when ferrets are out. When a cat escaped, the 2 little ones chased her back into her room!
They enjoyed the games and all the attention at clinic day.
So we are a happy family, with Carlos snuggling it up with "the girls".
It turned out to be a perfect fit. Thanks, Mum Brenda!
Mucho Love,
  Fern, Daisy, Carlos, Paz, Gypsy, Bella and Lulu {and me, Sandy}

June 20, 2016:
The girls and Carlos are happy together. I watch, at play time, and I am able to tell if he wants a time out {and they don't} I have a cat litter box in upstairs hallway, and Fern has used it a few times. At first I thought she was just playing in it, then I saw her "back up".

May 22, 2016:
The 2 new kids got here at 1:30 this afternoon, they left for their new home at 3:30 with Sandy and Bruce. Two beautiful little girls. Sandy and Bruce were here before the kids got here, while we were cleaning out the garage I asked them if they would consider taking these 2 kids in.
Sandy is good about following my lead with the ferrets, they already use OFD, the girls deserve to have a family that can give them more time than I can give.. she promised to keep them away from Carlos until they settle. It makes more sense to let them go settle in that home than getting them settled here and then again in a new home. Done deal they have a new home, we didn't fill another cage.

Initial Contact, Owner, April 14, 2016:
Hi,
I wanted to contact you regarding surrendering my 2 ferrets. I run a business here in Auburn and its grown to the point that I haven’t been able to be home as much to give them the care that they need. I feel awful that they’re not getting out of their cage as much as before and I feel it’s going to start taking a toll on their health soon.
I’ve done a lot of research trying to find a good place for them as I’ve seen horrible articles about Craigslist and other sites like that of what happens to some animals that are found on those sites. I want them to go to a place where they’ll be safe and will be able to find a good family as they are both very sweet ferrets.
I do believe they’re up to date on their shots, but I will contact my vet to double check. I have a large cage and of course all their toys that I’m willing to donate as well as the food required on your site. I’m not sure what food you have to give them, but I’ve always bought them the Marshall’s Premium food.
Please let me know if you’re able to take them, also if you are, would I be able to come visit before? This is very hard for me to do, I care for them a lot, but I know with my work schedule they’re not getting the exercise and proper care that they need. Thank you and I look forward to speaking with you.
  Kevin

Shelter Response:
Good morning Kevin,
We have an opening at this time, this link will explain all that is required to surrender your ferrets to us. The ferrets must be current on vaccines with documentation.
New York State requires ferrets to be vaccinated with the rabies vaccine yearly, a more important vaccine is distemper. The distemper shots that are given to the ferrets before leaving the breeder are null and void as the FDA label states this vaccine does not work on kits under 8 weeks of age. The kits being moved from the breeder to the stores are 6 weeks when shipped.
Our web link includes ferret knowledgeable veterinarians available to get this done if you do not have a veterinarian of your own.
Current means 8 months or longer before the ferrets need to be vaccinated again. As the web site states everything that belongs to the ferrets comes with them up to and including the cage.
We do not separate cage mates so it is imperative that if you decide you are surrendering your ferrets to this facility you keep us informed so we keep an appropriate opening for you. We work on a first come first serve basis.
The shelter directors work schedule varies on a day to day basis so we need to determine a time that fits both yours and her schedule. Surrenders generally take 45 min to a hour to complete.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Owner's Response, May 9, 2016:
Hi Brenda,
I'm sorry it took this long to get back to you but my vet just finally got back to me. I will need to get their shots updated as they ran out November 2015. I will be setting up an appointment to get their shots done. Do you still have available space?
  Kevin

Shelter Response:
Yes we still have room but you better check with that vet about distemper vaccine. We had to turn a family away because they were told their vet did not have the distemper vaccine and the family was unwilling to take them to our vet to get the distemper vaccine. Rabies is NYS mandated; if distemper walks in our door it will decimate the shelter population. Let me know.

Owner's Response:
I'm making an appointment for them to get their Rabies and Distemper updated, so they will have their shots up to date and I'll bring the paperwork as well. I'll let you know as soon as they’re done and then we can schedule a time for the surrender. Thank you for your response and I will let you know soon.

Update: Just spoke with my vet, they're getting their updated shots on May 17th. When would be a good time for you after that to meet?

Shelter Response:
What time is the appointment? Ideally getting them here right after the appointment; but that will depend on your schedule and what time you would get to Naples. I drive school bus so I am in and out throughout the day.

Owner's Response:
The appointment is in the evening on the 17th at 5:20PM. It's about an hour and a half drive to Naples from Baldwinsville. The appointment should be quick as they close at 5:30 anyway, but if you do not want to do a surrender that late at night I can come in at another time. If it's easier you can call me on my cell phone as well if you'd like to discuss.

Shelter Response:
Okay after the vet appointment won't work. When I get the shelter settled after work tonight I will call you so we can discuss what works best for both of us and the fur kids. It is time for my afternoon bus run.

Owner's Response:
Sounds good, I’ll talk to you later. My cell phone is -.

Shelter Response:
Our meet up day and time is May 22 at 1 pm - Please bring everything that belongs to them with you as well as the vet documentation.

Shelter Response, May 21, 2016:
We are still on tomorrow 1 pm? The fur kids were vaccinated with both distemper and rabies correct? Sorry to sounds like a broken record, but everyone that has wanted to surrender has been told by their vets they don't have the distemper vaccine.. I am a bit sceptical these days that anyone does vaccinate with the distemper vaccine.

Owner's Response:
Hi Brenda,
Yup we are good to go! They got their rabies and distemper and are very healthy. I'll bring the paperwork to show they received both. See you tomorrow at 1.
